Peri-menopause and menopause can be a trying time for many women. Up to 80% of women experience menopausal symptoms so it makes sense to take extra special care of ourselves at this time. Symptoms such as hot flushes, irregular periods, mood swings, irritability, feeling depressed or anxious, insomnia, aches and pains and uncomfortable dryness “down there” can have quite an impact on your daily life, relationships, and general feeling of wellbeing

Here are some natural ways to reduce menopausal symptoms:

Herbal medicine

Herbs traditionally used during menopause are black cohosh, sage, rehmannia, Zizyphus, Chinese yam to name a few. Try to find products specifically formulated to relieve the common symptoms of menopause. Herbs can be very effective in reducing hot flushes and insomnia, relieving feelings of stress and fatigue and helping improve overall nourishment of the body. Speak to a naturopath or herbalist to find a formula right for you.

Magnesium and B vitamins

A good quality magnesium powder with added B vitamins can be a great help for better energy levels, quality of sleep and feeling of well being. Magnesium is often dubbed “the happy mineral” due its positive effect on the nervous system. Magnesium is also needed by the body to regulate calcium levels, balance thyroid levels, reduce muscle aches and cramps (including prevention of migraines and headaches), healthy brain function, and for heart and cardiovascular health. All important during our menopausal years!

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is also a fantastic modality to not only address menopausal symptoms and those frustrating hot flushes, but also health issues such as digestive complaints, stress, insomnia, musculoskeletal pain and overall immune health.
